Manchester United Eyes Emiliano Martinez Amid Goalkeeping Challenges

Send Push
Manchester United's Transfer Pursuit

Manchester United is reportedly considering a last-minute transfer for Aston Villa's seasoned goalkeeper, Emiliano Martinez, as the transfer deadline approaches on Monday. The club has been actively searching for solutions to their ongoing goalkeeping issues, with discussions also taking place regarding 23-year-old Belgian prospect Senne Lammens from Royal Antwerp.

Lammens' Situation and Martinez's Experience

Lammens, who is highly regarded in Belgium, has expressed a strong desire to join Manchester United and has missed the last two matches for Antwerp due to transfer rumors. Antwerp is under financial strain from an external loan, necessitating a significant sale. However, while Lammens shows promise, he lacks the extensive experience that Martinez possesses. The latter is a World Cup champion with Argentina and a two-time FIFA goalkeeper of the year, having made 197 appearances in the Premier League.

Ongoing Goalkeeping Issues for United

After United's narrow 3-2 victory against Burnley, manager Ruben Amorim acknowledged the challenges faced by the club's goalkeepers, stating, "It is tough to be a Manchester United goalkeeper at this moment." Current goalkeepers Altay Bayindir and Andre Onana have both made critical errors this season, with Bayindir's latest mistake nearly costing the team their hard-earned win, saved only by an injury-time penalty from Bruno Fernandes.

Interest in Lammens and Future Prospects

Interest in Lammens extends beyond United, as Turkish powerhouse Galatasaray is also monitoring the young goalkeeper. They may consider Bayindir or Onana if United opts to focus on Martinez or another alternative. Sources within the club indicate that Manchester United intends to sign only one goalkeeper before the transfer window closes at 19:00 BST on Monday.

Martinez's Uncertain Future at Aston Villa

Earlier this summer, United looked into the possibility of acquiring Martinez on loan, but Aston Villa was not willing to part with their 32-year-old goalkeeper. Martinez, who appeared to say goodbye to Villa fans at the end of last season, recently played in the club's loss against Brentford, leaving his future uncertain as the transfer deadline approaches.
